If you’ve ever driven past the towering globe entrance or attended one of the massive cheerleading competitions, you know: the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex isn’t just another corner of Walt Disney World — it’s a world of athletic magic all its own.
But how did it all begin? What stood there before? And why has it become such a magnet for sports and youth competitions from across the globe? Let’s dive in.
🏟️ Building the Dream: Origins of the Wide World of Sports
The story of ESPN Wide World of Sports began in the mid-1990s. Walt Disney World leadership realized that sports tourism — youth leagues, amateur athletics, and professional training — was booming, and Disney wanted to be at the heart of it.
- Opened: March 28, 1997
- Original Name: Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex
- Size: Over 220 acres, featuring multiple venues for baseball, softball, basketball, track and field, soccer, tennis, and more.
Before its construction, the land was relatively undeveloped — part of the vast, swampy property Disney had acquired in the 1960s that would slowly be transformed into themed areas over decades.
When it opened, the complex featured a Major League Baseball spring training stadium, multi-sport fields, a fieldhouse, and track & field facilities — all designed to host everything from youth tournaments to pro-level events.
🎉 The Cheer and Dance Invasion: When It All Began

Cheerleading and dance competitions became a huge part of WWOS’s identity starting in the early 2000s.
Organizations like Varsity Spirit began holding national championships there, attracting teams from all 50 states (and internationally too).
Over time, it grew into the premier destination for cheer competitions such as:
- The Cheerleading Worlds
- The Summit and D2 Summit
- UCA & UDA National High School Cheerleading and Dance Team Championships
- All-Star Sports Cheer Events
By the mid-2010s, the sheer volume of events led Disney to expand the facilities, including building The Arena — a massive, air-conditioned venue specifically designed to host cheer and dance events at a world-class level.
Today, if you have a friend or family member involved in competitive cheer or dance, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself at WWOS sooner or later!
🏀 Other Big Sporting Moments at WWOS

Cheer and dance might be some of the most famous events today, but Wide World of Sports has hosted some truly historic moments over the years:
- ⚾ Atlanta Braves Spring Training (1998–2019): The Braves called WWOS home each spring for over two decades.
- 🏀 NBA Bubble (2020): In one of the wildest chapters of sports history, WWOS became the home for the NBA restart during the COVID-19 pandemic, with all games played on-site without fans.
- ⚽ MLS Is Back Tournament (2020): Major League Soccer also used WWOS as its return-to-play site during the pandemic shutdown.
- 🏃♂️ RunDisney Events: WWOS regularly hosts health and fitness expos for RunDisney marathons and races.
- ⚽ Soccer Showcases: Elite youth soccer tournaments and international training camps frequently use WWOS’s soccer fields.
- 🎾 Tennis and Track: WWOS also hosts regional and national youth events in tennis and track & field.
🎟️ What’s There Today
Today, WWOS features:
- The AdventHealth Arena: Primarily used for cheerleading, basketball, and volleyball events.
- Champion Stadium: Though no longer hosting MLB spring training, it’s still used for special events.
- HP Field House: For basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics.
- ESPN Broadcast Center: Allowing real-time broadcast and coverage of major events.
- Fields and Courts: For baseball, softball, soccer, and multi-sport tournaments.
Plus, the overall layout allows Disney to seamlessly host events from tiny regional meets to global competitions.
🎉 Final Thoughts: Why WWOS Matters
The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex is more than just a set of fields and gyms — it’s a dream factory for athletes. Whether you’re a 10-year-old cheerleader chasing a national title or a pro basketball player in a historic NBA Bubble season, WWOS brings the magic of Disney and the spirit of sports together in one place.
And with the complex still bustling with events like The Cheerleading Worlds this very weekend, it’s clear that magic is still alive and well!
